Justice

I didn’t think I would ever feel warm again. Rot and mildew are all I could smell for the first fifteen minutes of my shower. The urge to turn and run to my saviors this second is so damn strong. I can’t explain it beyond an invisible tether pulling at me.

I wrap a towel around me and secure the thick edge between my breasts before swiping at the steam-covered mirror. I close my eyes and focus on my body, trying to ground myself in this moment. It’s amazing how a shower makes everything better. The aches and pains from the hard table edged out by the hot water.

I bite my lip. Maybe not completely better, but at least good. Yeah, I’ll go with good. Nothing can erase the last few hours from my life. That’s a fact. It happened and I have the bruises to remind me over the next few days of my close call. I hold a hand over the area of my stomach where the braver of the two assholes punched me for kicking him before they could manage to tie me up.

The skin over my lower abdomen hurts like a son of a bitch, but it will fade with time. I’ll do good to remember even fool amateurs like those two men can kill. My hands shake but by the time I finish blow-drying the long lengths of my hair, I’m able to at least brush the tangles out without shaking. “I’m safe,” I remind myself. And all due to the men waiting for me in the living room.

When I’d asked to be taken to one of their homes, I should have known their silence meant something. Thirty minutes after leaving that nightmare hellhole behind us, Lucian pulled us into underground parking and my short-lived hope died. A short elevator ride later and Jacob carried me into my penthouse overlooking a beautifully lit park I adore. I only caught a glimpse of it before being carefully placed in front of a master bath.

Jacob had turned on the hot water and before quietly leaving me to my shower, placed a tender kiss on my shoulder whispering, “You’re safe,” against my skin.

I raise my gaze to meet my own through the droplets of water trickling down the bathroom mirror. “I’m safe.” But is that enough? I touch the dark circle marring my cheekbone. They could have died today. I could have died and what do I have to show for my life? What connections have I ever experienced? I shiver though I feel no cold draft against my steam-warmed skin.

“I’m safe.” Repeating the words solidifies my thoughts. But being safe and being alive are two very different things. I’m learning that the hard way.

The whole ride back to my apartment Jacob cradled me on his lap while my legs were spread over Seth’s lap. They held me close and for the first time in a long long while I didn’t feel alone. I felt warm and safe. Their soothing touches calmed me.
